Grams per Square Meter, a measurement that indicates the weight of paper.

GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter, a measurement that indicates the weight of paper. In junk journaling, GSM is used to choose the appropriate paper for specific purposes, such as creating sturdy covers, delicate inserts, or textured layers. The higher the GSM, the heavier and thicker the paper.

Techniques

  • Understanding GSM Ranges:
    • Lightweight Paper (50–100 GSM): Ideal for writing, stamping, or layering. Examples: book pages, printer paper.
    • Medium-Weight Paper (120–200 GSM): Versatile for journaling pages, envelopes, and fussy cutting. Examples: scrapbook paper, vellum.
    • Heavyweight Paper (210–300+ GSM): Suitable for covers, tags, and mixed media. Examples: cardstock, watercolor paper.
  • Matching Techniques to GSM:
    • Use lower GSM paper for folding or intricate cuts.
    • Opt for higher GSM paper for painting, heavy embellishments, or wet media to avoid buckling.
  • Layering: Combine papers of varying GSM to add texture and dimension to journal pages.
  • Customization: Experiment with GSM by printing digitals or ephemera on different weights of paper for varied effects.
